Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is the most common infection in the US. In fact, more than 75% of American adults over the age of 35 have some form of periodontal disease.
Though there are a number of people who are infected, most are not aware that they have gum or periodontal disease. This disease is relatively unnoticeable until it reaches the advanced and often untreatable stage. Gum disease can result in bad breath, red swollen & bleeding gums, and the destruction of bone leading to tooth loss. The only way to know if you have gum disease is to have your gums evaluated. Don't let gum disease take the teeth out of your smile.
Gum Disease: What, Why, and Effects:
Periodontal diseases are gum infections that destroy the attachment fibers and supporting bone that hold your teeth in your mouth. Bacterial plaque is the main cause of this disease. Plaque is a sticky substance that forms on your teeth daily. If not removed it will form calculus a hard deposit difficult to remove. The toxins (poisons in plaque and calculus) cause the gum infections that will destroy the supporting tissues around the teeth.
When this happens the gums peel away from the teeth forming a pocket which is more difficult to clean and fills easily with plaque. As more gum tissue and supporting bone are destroyed the teeth become loose and if not treated will be lost.
